At our store location in Tempe, we focus on what we call "practical" ultralight backpacking - that is, lighter than normal gear that doesn't cause wailing-and-gnashing-of-teeth level suffering.  So if you want to sleep with the mosquitoes under a skinny tarp on a piece of cardboard as a mat, knock yourself out.  Or maybe just carry a couple more pounds with a decent shelter and comfortable sleeping setup.  Either way, hike your own hike.

For backpacking shelters, our lightest option is to buy a few feet of Tyvek and string it out with paracord.  To be wrapped up a bit better, we carry bivies and various tents from Sierra Designs, MSR and Big Sky, new and used, including:
